For those who learn best in the traditional classroom setting, this course offers classroom lectures, lab days, clinical field experiences and study groups.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the ethical and legal responsibilities of an EMT, explain the EMS system and its function, describe the role of the EMT in an EMS system.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform an assessment of vital signs.
  • Demonstrate airway assessment and management techniques used for medical and trauma patients.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize and treat patients suffering from respiratory, cardiac, or altered mental status emergencies.
  • Demonstrate the procedure for delivering a newborn during normal or complicated childbirth as well as basic infant and pediatric resuscitation techniques.
  • Demonstrate proper technique for providing emergency care to victims of trauma.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of ambulance operations.

This course was designed in accordance with the National Registry and State of Idaho EMT Curriculum. This course will provide education in the treatment and transport of ill and injured patients in the emergency setting. Additionally, successful completion of this course will make the student eligible to take the exams required to obtain a national certification as an EMT. This course includes lectures, demonstrations, practical skills, instruction and clinical hours. Clinical hours and practical skills labs are mandatory and are in addition to scheduled class time.

Emergency Medicine Academy’s blended EMT course is designed to allow you to earn your EMT certification at your own pace.

The hands on skills and psychomotor training will conclude your EMT course after all online material and clinical time is completed. This portion of your course takes place over four days. EMA ensures that during your hands on skills lab week you will be training with experienced, current 911 providers in Boise.

During the registration process of this course, you will schedule the hands on skills week of your choosing.  Please allow yourself ample time to complete all online material. The didactic portion must be completed prior to your skills week. The average EMA student takes between 2 – 3 months to complete the online work. However students can complete it in more or less time depending on personal preference. Students have one year from their date of registration to complete the entire course.

When you complete your registration and payment is processed, your textbook will be shipped the following business day from the publisher Jones and Bartlett.

The virtual classroom is available twenty four hours a day seven days a week. You can view all lectures and videos then complete the quizzes, exams and interactive activities whenever you choose.

You can email an instructor any time of day or use the message board in the virtual classroom. Phone or Web X live meeting time can be scheduled as needed. Students can email instructors and schedule a phone or Web X appointment for office hours. All inquiries for technical support will have a response within 12 hours. All inquiries related to course material will have a response within 24 hours.

A current American Heart Association healthcare provider CPR certification or equivalent is a requirement prior to your clinical time and/or lab week. If you do not have an American Heart Association healthcare provider CPR or equivalent certification, EMA can provide the required training. Please email us promptly to schedule your CPR certification course with us.

Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness, Landing Zone Officer, and Extrication Awareness Certifications are included in this course.

Clinical requirements for each student will be scheduled during their didactic portion of the online EMT course. Clinicals must be completed prior to skills week. All clinicals are scheduled with agencies in Ada County. If you would like to schedule clinical time with an agency outside of Ada County this can be arranged but it must be done with cooperation between the outside agency and Emergency Medicine Academy. Please let us know if you are interested in this option at the beginning of your didactic portion of the EMT course.

Students will be given an EMA uniform polo shirt prior to their scheduled clinicals.

EMA conducts in house NREMT psychomotor testing. At the conclusion of the hands on skills week you will have the opportunity to participate in the NREMT psychomotor test. This means that upon graduation from EMA you will only have to complete the NREMT written test to earn your NREMT certification.

Registration fees include the complete online course, your textbook, online lectures, interactive study materials, clinical rotations, and the uniform polo shirt for your clinical rotation and skills week.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Emergency Medicine Academy’s Advanced EMT course is designed For those who learn best in the traditional classroom setting, this course offers classroom lectures, lab days, clinical field experiences and study groups

Emergency Medicine Academy’s Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certificate program prepares students to provide advanced emergency medical care and transportation to the critically ill and injured patients who access the emergency medical system. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program of study is designed to take students from Basic Life Support to Advanced Life Support skills and advanced patient assessment.

Emergency Medicine Academy’s Advanced EMT  program prepares students to become successful providers developing them personally and professionally to handle high stress emergency situations and provide excellent care to the community. Upon successful completion of Emergency Medicine Academy’s Advanced EMT  course you will be prepared to function as a team member in a comprehensive EMS system and be able to perform interventions with advanced equipment found on an ALS ambulance.

Emergency Medicine Academy’s Advanced EMT course will prepare you for:

  • Basic airway management
  • Insertion of a supra-glottic airway
  • Suctioning an intubated patient
  • Usage of a CPAP device
  • Initiation of peripheral intravenous therapy
  • Administration of non-medicated intravenous fluids
  • Pediatric and adult intra-osseous placement
  • Needle decompression of a tension pneumothorax
  • Pharmacological interventions beyond the Basic EMT level:
    • Administration of nitroglycerine by the sublingual route
    • Administration of epinephrine 1:1,000 for anaphylaxis and 1:10,000 for cardiac arrest
    • Administration of Dextrose 50%, Dextrose 25%, and glucagon for a diabetic emergency
    • Administration of naloxone for opioid overdose
    • Administration of nitrous oxide for pain management
    • Administration of inhaled beta-agonist medications such as albuterol and ipratropium for respiratory emergencies caused by asthma, COPD, etc.

Students learn through theory and practical application how to be professional Emergency Medical Technicians at an advanced level of care. Students are prepared through lecture, laboratory, and clinical experiences. Graduates from this program receive a Certificate of Completion. Successful completion of the program allows students to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Advanced EMT certification examination and apply for licensure as an Advanced EMT.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Hold current National Certification at EMT level or a current State EMT Certification (verified)
  • Verification from the Program Director that you hold Basic Life Support CPR certification (AHA or equivalent)
  • Demonstrate competence in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) skills.
  • Holds a High School Diploma or GED
  • Negative TB test (within the past year)
  • Clean criminal background (verify with the EMS Bureau)
  • Students must be able to attend 90% of all classroom and training hours.

The clinical will allow student to apply skills they learn during lab in real world situations. EMA ensures that during your skill labs you will be training with experienced, current 911 providers in Boise.

Program Cognitive Objective:

At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate the clinical information relative to his/her role as an entry level Advanced EMT.

Program Psychomotor Objective:

At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of an entry level Advanced EMT.

Program Affective Objective:

At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations for the entry level Advanced EMT.

Advanced EMS Skills Course   View Upcoming Classes

The Advanced EMS Skills Course is two days of hands on workshops during which students learn to perform advanced skills as well as how to be an integral team member in an ALS driven department.

Workshops will teach students how to:

  • Prep and secure vascular access ( IV &  IO)
  • Secure an airway with supra-glottic  devices
  • Perform and interpret EKGs
  • Administer medications (IM, IV, IO)
  • Manage respiratory patients with CPAP and nebulized breathing treatments
  • Make decisions and manage advanced scenarios

Students will earn 12 hours of CE credit, and the class tuition can be applied to Emergency Medicine Academy’s EMT Advanced Blended Course.
